Cruising South Carolina

After Georgia, we headed to Harbour Town Yacht Basin in Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island, where the RBC Heritage Classic was played the week prior (PGA Tournament). We were among some large yachts in this beautiful harbor, with lots of shopping and restaurants. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner with good friends Mike & Trish LaSovage who live just off the island. My mom and sister Renee met us here to spend 4 nights with us on the boat. We restocked the boat with food and headed to Beaufort, SC for a night. We were able to watch the Blue Angels fly over in formation as there was an airshow at the marine base in Beaufort….its always awesome to see the Blue Angels! Beaufort, SC is a cute town with many shops and restaurants…..unfortunately several were closed as we were there on a Sunday.

Our next travel day took us up the intracoastal for 48 miles to Church Creek anchorage, a beautiful open anchorage with several other boats. We played euchre, Skip Bo, grilled dinner and had a relaxing afternoon and next morning. It was then on to the Safe Harbor “Mega Dock” in Charleston, SC for a couple of nights. Once we arrived there, we did a carriage ride around Charleston, which was a great way to learn some history and see some of its beautiful homes. Mom and Renee spent one night in Charleston with us, then drove their rental car (which happened to be a Mustang) to Hilton Head to pick up their car. Fortunately they were able to get a one-way rental, which is difficult to do these days. We were sad to see them go, it was so much fun having them enjoy some of our adventure with us.

After leaving Charleston, we headed to Georgetown, SC for 2 nights. We visited the Rice Museum, walked around town and met some new looper friends, Joe and Lynn from No Rush, who started their loop out of St. Joseph, MI. Funny fact about rice in this part of the country: Georgetown produced and shipped 50% of the world’s rice back in the 1850’s. This all ended when the Civil War ended and the 13th Amendment was passed in 1865 to abolish slavery. We are learning so much on this trip!!!!

After Georgetown, we headed to Myrtle Beach Yacht Club for a couple of nights. It was a huge boat harbor with a couple of great restaurants. We were weathered in for a day so really didn’t do much, but got out for a scooter ride to get some groceries after the storms passed. Had a great dinner at Clarks Seafood and Steakhouse!

We are now in St. James, NC and leave tomorrow to head north. We are looking forward to Nicole and Dee joining us in a few days to experience part of our journey.
